THE HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA

Nigeria was set to welcome her first university after fourteen years of unrelenting criticisms of the Yaba Higher College. Following a report from two commissions set up to investigate the practices and principles which should govern university operations in Nigeria, these commissions were set up in 1943 and was headed by Asquith and Elliot. The commissions’ reports favoured the establishment of university in Nigeria and in the year 1948, 104 students of Yaba Higher College was transferred to the University College, Ibadan being the first university in Nigeria, however, this university was totally tied to London academic curriculum until 1962 where it became autonomous and it name was changed to University of Ibadan. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said the incumbent governor of Abia State would be the last the Labour Party produce to govern the state. Kalu made this disclosure in a video that went viral on Monday while he was addressing the chances of his party, the All Progressives Congress, in the next election. According to the 53-year-old former spokesman of the green chambers of the National Assembly, representing the Bende Federal Constituency, Otti has done well as a governor but the state needed to be governed by APC because of President Bola Tinubu’s contribution to the state. Troops kill Boko Haram commander, others in Borno

The Nigerian Army announced on Sunday that its troops had neutralised a notorious Boko Haram commander, Abu Rijab, and other terrorist fighters in an offensive operation on Saturday. This was made known in a post on the Nigerian army’s official X Handle. It said that the operation took place in Bula Daloye, Bama Local Government Area of Borno. It said the successful operation was in addition to the surrender of numerous terrorists and their families to the troops as a result of sustained pressure against their enclaves. Why we insist on new constitution — The Patriots

THE Patriots, a group of eminent Nigerians and elder statesmen, have restated its insistence on a new constitution to save the country. Responding to concerns over its meeting with President Bola Tinubu on August 9, the Chief Emeka Anyaoku-led body, said a new grundnorm is needed because the 1999 constitution is too undemocratic and flawed to be amended. Agreeing with the statement credited to Mallam Tanko Yakassai about the need to consult widely on the initiative to give Nigeria a new, truly federal constitution, The Patriots said a combination of the provisions of the 1963 constitution and recommendations would yield the desired new constitution. My dear brother Paul, Just like I have told you several times, I am not in any competition with you or anybody else. However, seeing you grant countless interviews where you constantly discredit my efforts in the group that we both created and built together really speaks volumes.
